Amiga returns with the Commodore Amiga Mini
Relive a little of the home computing magic from the 80s, courtesy of the computer stalwart that helped to start it all. Commodore USA, the latest company to own the rights to the ping-ponging Amiga name, have been dedicated since their inception in 2010 to bringing back the long defunct but familiar name and restore it to its pre-business-blunder glory.
In their halcyon days, Commodore could be seen fighting the home computer war against Atari and Texas Instruments (meanwhile Apple Computer were serving a niche desktop publishing purpose… how things change). They were the multi–tasker's PC, and that is something Commodore USA is hoping to drive home with the Amiga Mini.
Housed in a potentially lawsuit-inducing, Mac Mini-esque sandblasted aluminium case, the Amiga Mini is the first machine from them using the acquired Amiga name. Heavy hitting innards such as the quad-core 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB hard disk as standard and a 1GB nVidia GeForce GT 430 GPU should mean it can handle pretty much any current game on high settings without so much as a grumble.
With a Blu-ray drive as standard in combination with the more than adequate hard drive make an excellent opportunity for a home cinema arrangement using the Mini, made possible through the HDMI output on the back. The operation of things on the Amiga Mini is handled through the Commodore OS, their own version of the popular Linux open source operating system, with the option to run Windows from a dual-boot menu (choosing either the Commodore OS, or Windows to start up) or to run it seamlessly integrated within the Commodore OS itself.
Those thinking the Mini is Amiga in name, but not heart, can find solace in the Commodore 64. The new Commodore 64 to be precise, though you wouldn't think so looking at it. Set in the form of the original, the secret lies inside, with a Dual Core 2.13GHz Atom processor, 4GB memory and fairly similar other specifications as the Min. It might not be quite as much the gaming powerhouse, but will more than likely inspirea a nostalgic twinge and the urge to watch Rocky III.
