Colourful Loomstate clothing can be worn eight ways
Do you like the dress pictured below? Which one, you ask? Well, all the pictures actually show the same dress. One reversible three-coloured, wearable-eight-different-ways dress!
The Akan dress is just one of 7 designs by New York-based fashion company Loomstate. The four dresses, two tops and one cardigan in the 321 collection can all be worn several different ways (the name 321 is derived from the slogan "3 ways 2 wear 1 piece", which is, if anything, an understatement, considering the eight variations demonstrationed by the Akan above). This versatility is not only a godsend for fickle followers of fashion who want to wear one colour one day and and other the next. The fact that one item can be worn so many different ways also makes that one garment highly sustainable.
European Night of Museums 2012
European Night of Museums 2012
For many, Saturday night is shaping up to be the European Night of Football, with the Champions League final in Munich deciding which team gets to call itself the continent's best. For those who take less of an interest in professional sports (or who are still sulking that their team didn't make the cut), the European Night of Museums might offer a welcome distraction.
3,000 museums in 40 countries across Europe are throwing their doors open at a time when their venerable halls would usually be visitor-free. The museum's night guards will have a lot more company than usual this weekend, with late-night museum events steadily gaining popularity, ever since the first museum night was launched in Berlin in 1997. The opportunity to experience culture way past bedtime is not the only draw, as most museums are also spectacularly illuminated for the occasion (as these images show), and many have announced special events to lure the crowds.
Celebrate the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th year in special suite
Celebrate the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th year in special suite
San Francisco is an uproar as the city's trusty icon celebrates a momentous birthday this year. The Golden Gate Bridge will be 75 years old come May 27th, and it's getting one heck of a birthday party. Anyone interested in the storied structure can visit photography and art exhibitions, bike to the bridge with the YMCA or see the documentary on the building of the bridge, being screened very weekday this year. It all comes to a climax next Sunday, when parades of watercraft and historic cars honour Golden Gate history while works of dance, film, music and visual art interpret the stalwart bridge's influence today.
For those who can't make it to town for the soiree, you can still book into the only hotel suite around that's dedicated to the icon, The Golden Gate Suite at Hotel Palomar San Francisco, where guests will get special amenities from now to the end of the year.

Virgin Atlantic the first to offer in-flight calls and airside music studio
Virgin Atlantic the first to offer in-flight calls, music studio

Following an announcement on Monday, Virgin Atlantic has become the first in the industry to offer in-flight calls. Available aboard the line's new A330 aircraft flying between London and New York, plans are to provide the service aboard 20 planes, including the refurbished Boeing 747, by the end of the year. The project totalling GBP 100 million encompasses a redesign of the Upper Class cabin, keeping passengers connected to land at 35,000 feet with a hub for smart phones, USBs and tablet computers.
Apparently remaining true to the roots from which his billions sprang, Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic has also opened a recording studio at its London Heathrow airport Clubhouse lounge. The compact suite, kitted out by digital solutions company Avid, was built to match industry standards. According to Avid spokesperson Ben Nemes, it's "the world's only airside production suite", and Virgin hopes it will come in handy for the recording artists and entertainment industry members who frequently fly from London to Los Angeles and New York.
Brand new Southern Wind Shipyard build launched in Cape Town
Brand new Southern Wind Shipyard build launched in Cape Town
Imagine: your dream is to build a swift sailing yacht, and instead you end up buying a whole shipyard. Does this sound realistic? Maybe not, but that is what happened to Willy Persico, a passionate Italian yachtsman who invested in a shipyard in a country that has gone through major political and structural changes in recent decades.
Born in Naples, Persico has always breathed sea air, and he inherited a passion for ships from his father. Not without reason, he chose to become an engineer and soon took a job as the head of Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, the famous producer of hydroplanes and fast ships. Though Persico was fascinated by the marine industry, his true love was always competitive sailing.
EVO Chef Bill Collier on Italian tradition with a dash of Bali
EVO Chef Bill Collier on Italian tradition with a dash of Bali
Seminyak, a lively township on Bali’s west coast, has emerged in the last decade as a dynamic dining destination where a melting pot of expat chefs riff on international flavours and local Indonesian cuisine. Colourfully inked, born and bred New Yorker Bill Collier got hooked on the island a decade ago, now bringing his indomitable personality and Italian roots to concept restaurant EVO. The vintage Italian eatery is designed to evoke the 60s golden era, yet in cultures-collide Seminyak tradition, it's set amongst the dreamy tropical languor of palms and vine-covered trees.
Back in the nineties, I built my own successful restaurant in San Francisco’s South Bay, 231 Ellsworth which specialised in French cuisine re-imagined with a modern Californian sensibility. After the dot.com bubble burst I was ready for a change. So I took off to see the world, ultimately heading for Japan – I had been trained in Fugu Japanese cuisine at 18 (the preparation of the deadly pufferfish). As I passed though Bali, I was offered the chance to be the chef at Allila restaurant in Ubud, the intoxicating spiritual centre in central Bali’s mountains. I also got to know the wider range of Indonesian islands when I took to the seas as a chef on the yacht Silolona. I now have an invaluable knowledge of what produce grows regionally.
The EVO concept is Italian food with a New York accent. The black and white photography is influenced by 60s ‘Dolce Vita’ style – the era of Sophia Loren, patron saint of Italian food. I once went truffle hunting with her and saw her passion for food and recipes firsthand.
